- When dissolved in water, potassium hydroxide exhibits a range of functions. Among its many roles: it acts as a carbon dioxide absorbent. In chemistry it is regarded as a strong base. It helps to obtain other potassium derivatives such as potassium salts. It is used in lithography for making plates.

- It serves as an electrolyte, especially in nickel-cadmium batteries. In resomation it is used to decompose the human body. A 5% aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide is specifically used to identify fungi. It is an integral part of the silicon wafer texturing process.
